 he
Police Athletic League's innovative "Positive Images" program recently
started another season of inspirational experiences for young PAL
girls. Sessions run from September through December and again in the
Spring. The girls-only esteem-building program expanded its scope
to reach hundreds of young ladies at nineteen PAL Centers across the
city.
The "Positive Images" experience consists of two 12-week series of
clinics and seminars designed to build self esteem and ambition in
PAL girls ages 11-17. The program was originally conceived several
years ago and has since broadened its scope.
Previous programs have featured speakers like WB17 news anchor Toni
Yates who addressed the girls of the Cozen PAL Center, news anchor
Pat Ciarrocci who addressed the girls of the Rizzo PAL Center, Denise
James from ABC, and Kathleen Sullivan from Comcast Corporation who
spoke with girls from Wissinoming PAL.
Organizations such as Woman Organized Against Rape and BEBASHI have
also hosted workshops educating the young ladies in the program.
Events likes these proved to be a great success due to the widespread
interest expressed by girls in the surrounding community.
Positive images is a program that has also taught many of the girls
the importance to give back to the community. The Rizzo Positive Images
program successfully launched its annual troop drive in which hundreds
of boxes filled with items were sent to troops in Iraq. The Hunting
Park Positive Images program teamed up with MANNA to prepare and package
hundreds of meals to be delivered to people within the Philadelphia
area who are living with HIV.
If you are interested in participating in this program either as a
speaker or audience member, please review this list of PAL Centers
that offer the Positive Images Program in your area.
Some
PAL participants have created web sites oriented towards sharing
the Positive Images experience. They are marked with an asterisk.
You're invited to visit them and find out more about the Positive
Images program in action!
